An 18th century Spanish Colonial 'coco chocolatero' white metal mounted chocolate cup, the coconut body with cast and pinned foliate S scroll handles, on a lappet sconce and pierced double rosette foot with cut heart petal border, 7.5cm high, 11.5cm wide
Note: combining the exoticism of the Pacific Islands and the traditional silver craftsmanship of Spain and Portugal, the coco chocolatero or hot chocolate cup became a household object for the Iberian elite in New Spain and the Americas from the 16th century onwards. The pierced and chased silverwork and form of this cup is typical of the pieces made in or exported to the Hispanic provinces from the late 17th and early 18th century. Similar examples appear in museum collections throughout the world. A similar example sold in these rooms in July 2024.
