An 18th century Spanish Colonial 'coco chocolatero' white metal mounted chocolate cup, the coconut body with applied pinned rim and cast foliate S scroll handles, on a lappet sconce and pierced double rosette foot with cut ogee petal border,8cm high, 11cm wide

Note: combining the exoticism of the Pacific Islands and the traditional silver craftsmanship of Spain and Portugal, the coco chocolatero or hot chocolate cup became a household object for the Iberian elite in New Spain and the Americas from the 16th century onwards. The pierced and chased silverwork and form of this cup is typical of the pieces made in or exported to the Hispanic provinces from the late 17th and early 18th century. Similar examples appear in museum collections throughout the world.
