Christopher Dresser for Hukin and Heath, an Aesthetic Movement silver plate and ceramic dish, circa 1880, oval ogee form with cast scallop shell and wave border, the handles mounted with white ceramic toads, modelled in high relief sitting with characterful startled poses and set with glass eyes, the figures probably Minton of Coalport, marked H&H to both the metal and porcelain, 35cm long
Note: reminiscent of Dresser's famous wardrobe door panel depicting falling toads, designed for Bushole House, Leicester, this Hukin and Heath dish combines the fashion for the novelty and grotesque so popular at the time, with repeat motifs and functionality, for which Dresser was known.
