Fine & Decorative Arts

Lot 679

679

Joseph Keller for Stevens and Williams, a Stourbridge engraved glass claret jug or ewer, probably Joseph Schiller circa 1880, spherical footed form with narrow neck, finely engraved with egrets between bamboo and prunus plants, 24.5cm high

Note: due to the exceptionally fine quality of the engraving on this piece, including the attention to detail and range of techniques employed in the execution of the design, only a handful of engravers would have had the necessary skills to produce this claret jug, most notably Joseph Schiller and William Fritsche. Similar designs with palm trees, roots and storks appear in the pattern books of designer Joseph Keller who worked for Stevens and Williams.
