20TH CENTURY DESIGN

Michael Jeffery studied History of Art at Warwick University before gaining ten years experience at Christie’s South Kensington where he started as a porter working up to Head of the British Decorative Arts Department. He was responsible for organising specialist auctions including Moorcroft Pottery, Clarice Cliff, Arts & Crafts and Studio Pottery. On moving to Salisbury in 2002, he opened a Design Department, establishing four specialist auctions a year and was also responsible for creating an inaugural Modern British Art auction in 2013.

Michael has set several significant auction records including for Martin Brothers pottery and a Lucie Rie bowl and in June 2025 he set a new world record for a piece of Moorcroft. He also organised the sale of highly important Wiener Werkstätte silver designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Palais Stoclet (which totalled over £600,000) and held the prestigious sale of the Studio Pottery collection of Professor Luke Herrmann in 2017.

Curating a Martin Brothers exhibition to celebrate the centenary of Robert Wallace Martin’s death in 2023 gave Michael the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience. He has volunteered for the committee of the Decorative Arts Society and published books on Arts & Crafts and Art Deco. Michael feels privileged handling beautiful objects on a daily basis and meeting like minded collectors.
