Catalogue notes
Harold Hailstone served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War and on returning took up a career as a cartoonist and illustrator. He returned to military service during the Second World War, joining the Royal Air Force from 1938 to 1945, and he was appointed a war artist in 1944. A companion painting to this is held in the Imperial War Museum collection.
