Harry Powell after Philip Webb for James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars, an Arts and Crafts wine glass, circa 1880, the plain rounded bowl on a double strand helix rope twist stem and plain conical foot, 13.5cm high
Note: a variation of the glassware produced for William Morris' home the Red House, from 1861, characterised by the multi strand twisted stems, this glass combines the taste for historical English and Northern European glass design with the simplicity, fineness and innovation for which Powell was famous. An example of this exact stem design, with a different shaped bowl, is illustrated in Evans, W. et al, 1995, Whitefriars Glass, Museum of London, p.75 fig.73; the Museum of London has the example illustrated in its permanent collection, ref 25041. Illustrations of Philip Webb's designs are in Jackson, L 1996, Whitefriars Glas, p.97, pls.4-5
