Harry Powell for James Powell and Sons, Whitefriars, an Arts and Crafts glass air twist and controlled bubble goblet, circa 1890, the optic ribbed bell shaped bowl with a spiral band of air bubbles, on a tapered stem of three helix strands, on a radial ribbed conical foot, 16.5cm high
Note: from the 1880s Harry Powell experimented with trapped air techniques, in the 18th century manner, re interpreting the traditional methods in a new and innovative way to create contemporary designs. This appears to be a very rare and unusually large example of the use of these techniques, reflecting the trend in the 1880s for Venetian capacity wine goblets.
See Evans, W. et al. 1995, Whitefriars Glass, Museum of London, p.79, pl.78 for an illustrated example of this pattern combination on a champagne flute, possibly from the same service.
